Love Pains by M. Scott Russell is a fast-paced crime thriller mixed with a bit of romance. The streets of the Northside are about to get bloody. With Donnell’s release from prison, he aims to work his way back to the top of the game and get revenge for his younger brother, Evan.

On the other side of town, we meet Angie and her best friend, Teresa, who were both high school teachers. Unexpectedly, Angie falls in love with Marc, a former substitute teacher at the school she works at. But Marc had a dark past that has left him broken for most of his life. On one of his business trips, he received a shocking call about the whereabouts of his sister, Diane, who has been missing for several years. In an attempt to save her, he is met with a big tragedy. How are Donnell and Teresa involved in all this? Could Diane still be alive after all these years?

The author was very descriptive in his writing, which made me picture each scene vividly. This book was written in the third person. The characters were all realistic and well developed. I loved that the author was able to combine themes such as love, drug abuse, betrayal, crime, and greed in a unique way. I found the plot very interesting. As I read, I became more curious, which was enough to keep me going.

When I began reading this book, I was a bit confused with the writing format. There are two sides to this story, and I felt the author should have identified them with a new chapter or the character’s name. I did not appreciate the poems in the book. It seemed inappropriate for a crime and mystery thriller. I loved the author’s writing style, but at a point, it became too descriptive, which made the book lengthy. I felt the way Marc and Angie expressed their love was a bit soppy. The apologies, poems, and profession of love were cliché.

Though this book had its flaws, I still enjoyed the storyline. The suspense added to the spice of the story. I did not notice any errors while reading this book, so it seems it was professionally well-edited. Due to the complaints stated in the paragraph above, it is only fair to give this book a 3 out of 4-star rating. I recommend this book to adults who enjoy a good crime thriller mixed with a bit of romance. I would also like to state that this book contains a few uses of profane language.

Could Diane still be alive after all this while? I guess I'll have to find out. I do agree with you concerning the involvement of poems in a crime thriller. The two are worlds apart and I can't really picture them together. Great work on the review.
