Review of The Unraveller
Dalafax is considered the safest city in England, and it appears so, or at least superficially. Beneath the calm waters, however, turbulent currents are beginning to rock the hitherto peaceful town. A serial killer, a pervert beyond human imagination, walks freely among the residents, unnoticed. Puffed up with an insatiable desire for control, the degenerate abductor has mastered ways to render the victims powerless but alert. At the start, the reader encounters one of the Unraveller’s victims, Katherine Kean, inside a cell. She does not remember how she got there, but she recognizes her captor’s voice. She has heard it before.
In one of the meeting rooms at The Royal, a hospital in Dalafax, the administrators inform Doctors Sharon Bulger and Khalid Shehzad that they will be members of the multidisciplinary team investigating the serial murders. Henceforth, it is not only a race against time to apprehend the Unraveller, the elusive killer, but also a fight against virulent misogyny and incompetence. Sharon and her best friend, Alison Becker, are prepared to solve the mystery.
If a story is made great by both the plot and characters, then The Unraveller by Dr K has passed the test. The second book in the Dr Sharon Bulger series introduces the reader to a world caught between two cultural ideologies. On the one hand, there is liberty, equality, and respect for human dignity; although one does not get to enjoy them freely as Dr. Sharon portrays, they exist. On the other hand, brutality and savagery rule at a time when one believes they ought to be extinct. Making a decision, which the author could have made straightforward, is not easy; the victims are trapped in a vicious cycle. In this, the author presents a realistic account.
I encountered both the most fascinating and the most despicable characters in the book. Consequently, while the main goal was stopping the murders and bringing the killer to book, internal scores have to be settled. Dr. Sharon decides to revenge on her ex-lover for using her and mistreating his wife; the revenge was peculiar, but it served its purpose. The condescending, leading criminal psychologist, Dr. Phillip Llandow, is equally put in his rightful place in the fullness of time. These characters and their actions made the story exciting. There was not a dull moment in the book.
Every aspect of the book was enthralling; I disliked nothing about it. However, I rate it three out of four owing to the number of errors I discovered while reading. The story is unquestionably thought-provoking, and the ending is pleasant, satisfactory, and a perfect enticing introduction to the sequel. I recommend the book to adult and young adult readers of crime mystery. Readers should be aware the book contains several sex scenes, including fetishes, and swearing.
