The Slaughter brothers, Bing and Ron, along with their friends and band members, Meat and Kaitlyn, only have two things to worry about. Whether they get a good score on the SAT-test or if they are going to be expelled because of a song they played about their history teacher, Mr. Brom, But after a possessed Mr. Brom tries to kill them in Meat's vacation cabin, which they use for band practice, suddenly their previous problems seem insignificant. Their minds are unlocked to a whole new supernatural world of kidnapping, sacrifices, demons, cults, and a possessed dagger with an attitude problem. All this and the SAT-test the next day? What are they going to do?

Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a horror-comedy fiction novel. I started this novel, expecting the usual style of writing for this type of novel, but was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional writing of the author. I did not have to wait long for the action to start and to get entranced by the chapter upon chapter of action and comedy. I simply could not stop reading.

The author's attention to detail and ability to describe characters and scenes is superb, and it helped my imagination create each scene, monster, and character from this book. I liked that the author worked a lot of comedy into his more serious scenes. It made the book easier and more pleasurable to read. The book was very well written and edited as I could not find any errors.

The thing I found most irritating was the use of the female character, Kaitlyn Krimpsen. She is so insignificant in the story that you could read it without her and still come to the same ending. I really think the author should have made her a bigger character with a less agitated persona or leave her out completely. Also, the use of the Lords' names in vain was a little too much, but that is just a personal opinion on the matter in general. Once or twice is acceptable, but more than twice in a chapter is overdone.

The negative aspects were still not enough for me to give this book anything less than 4 out of 4 stars. It is excellently written and edited. It is funny yet terrifying, with twists the readers will not see coming. I was surprised multiple times in this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I could never figure out what was going to happen next.

I recommend this book to young adult
readers who like action, adventure, and horror novels with some comedy. It is a well-written, action-packed novel with little profanity but a lot of blood and gore that will keep you entertained and satisfied with the ending and leave you wanting a sequel. Well done to the author on this book. I look forward to reading more of his work.
