Review of Faults
Faults is a crime thriller novel that centers around Sydney Livingstone, a pro tennis player. Over the years, she had faced many hardships, some of which included the death of her brother, the divorce of her parents and the recent death of her best friend (Milena), who was also a tennis player. She later became the target of a killer who was intent on her demise. The killer would go to any length to kill her, including harming anyone who stood in his way. This happens during a tennis tournament, which would impact Sydney and her boyfriend’s careers as tennis players. Now Sydney has the choices of facing both the tournament and the killer head-on, or she gives up the tournament and leaves town to escape from the killer. To Sydney, everyone is a suspect. Who is the killer? Why is he after her? Could he be some other player who doesn’t want Sydney to win, or could he be someone out for vengeance against Sydney?
I love the book because it contains short chapters, with each one ending with suspense that got me going straight to the next chapter. I also love how Orion Gregory used tennis terminologies, in such a way that would make even a newbie understand and enjoy the game of tennis. Even though I knew little about the game of tennis before reading this book, it wasn’t difficult for me to understand how it is played; the rules guiding the game, how a player wins, and so on. Also, by reading the novel, I discovered how important a coach is to his trainee—a player can be skillful, but with poor coaching, he might not go far in his career. The author also built a lot of mystery around the suspects, allowing readers to eliminate them one after the other in their minds until the killer’s identity was finally revealed.
The only thing I disliked about the book was that there were so many characters. There were the players, coaches, partners, police officers, and so on. At some point, I got confused by the names. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every chapter until the end.
I only discovered two errors while reading this book: a spelling error and a punctuation error. Although many profane words were used in the book, they only made the conversations between the characters more intriguing and I got to enjoy the book more. Because of this reason, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend it to lovers of crime and mystery novels, and those interested in the game of tennis. However, I would not recommend this book to readers sensitive to profanity.
