Review of I Vampire, Book 1: Hiding in the Shadows
Everyone has, at a point in time, imagined what life would be like as a real vampire. But would we truly ever understand what it really entails? I Vampire: Book 1: Hiding in the Shadows by Mark O’Brien answers that question perfectly.
Stan is a two-century-year-old vampire hiding in plain sight with a rather dark past. Having lived for a long time with military experience as a former soldier under Napoleon, he has devised the perfect method to stay alive and avoid any form of detection. He barely manages to keep up with the fast-changing modern world when he is faced with a romantic connection with a curious but exotic Asian woman. With her around, he feels the need to break down his walls and act freely. Who exactly is Theresa, and what are her true motives? Would she be the one to save him finally, or would she bring about his downfall and destruction? Find out in this amazing piece of romantic fiction.
I found a few positive aspects in this book. Initially, I believed the book was the usual vampire love story. But it turned out to have more depth than I expected. The book tackles a lot of predominant issues that are currently affecting American society, like energy, science, culture, etc. Though the book takes a political stance by critiquing past presidential administrations and their agendas, I believe it sends a strong message supporting equality and fairness for everyone.
I admire the author for stepping out of the stereotype to create his main characters. For example, Stan is portrayed as an emotional character with a strong instinct to hunt and survive. He is also well-rounded because all aspects of his dark personality are addressed. The book is crafted with unexpected plot twists leading to a suspense-filled ending. It has a complicated structure that requires any reader to think to understand the deeper meaning of its message correctly. There is a perfect blend of a serious tone and humor. It is obvious that research was carried out to determine that the historical facts were accurate to avoid confusion. I especially enjoyed these facts, and I was unable to put the book down while reading.
I also found a negative aspect in this book. There were a lot of errors in the book, which is proof that it was not professionally edited. As a result of the reasons listed above, I rate this book three out of four stars. The author makes notable observations peculiarly, and I reckon anyone will find it entertaining, even if they do not like vampire books. I recommend this book to lovers of romantic fiction and anyone interested in books containing history, adventures, and the supernatural.
