Amidst the various books nowadays with fast-paced action in the mystery genre, Hattie Vavaseur was a refreshing read with its old-fashioned, classic vibe and beautiful word-building to portray a paranormal tale of love, surviving cruelty and deceit, even after death. The book starts with our protagonist Hattie, a rich, elegant yet reclusive old lady, attending a funeral with no recollection of why she was there, watching people shed fake tears for whoever died, only to find out later that it was her. Her death sets in motion a chain of events involving her previous love, her lover's death, and the murderer. Prepare to be enthralled by a fascinating story about how the fates of various souls, deeply entwined with Hattie, play out.

Being a big fan of classics, Hattie Vavaseur was like an oasis for me. It is one of the toughest feats to narrate a story in the classical style. However, Author M. Rebecca Wildsmith did such an outstanding job consistently throughout the book that any skepticism left in my mind flew right out the window from the very first chapter. Every element exudes elegance, and courtesy, and is very comme il faut, as is typical of this style. Next comes the plot, and nothing is lacking yet again. The events, unfolding bit by bit, never leave the reader uninterested for a single moment. This romantic-mystery thriller plot in itself isn’t unheard of (you can see similarities between this novel and Daphne du Maurier's famous classic Rebecca), but its mix-up with supernatural element and humor was refreshing. Although the plot reflects upon the cruel and dark side of humans, it is light, fluffy, and never gets too dark.

There are not many flaws to be found in this novel. However, as an interested reader, I was disappointed by a few instances that were highlighted but not fully explained. For example, why Hattie's and the owner's cases were different from those of other souls in the afterlife. Even then, for aficionados of cozy mysteries, it is a perfect book to pick up.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4. It is well-written, evocative, and thrilling at all the right turns. The amount of work and care the author put into writing it, can be seen. It is a remarkably well-edited and praiseworthy work.

For classics fans like myself, this novel is a good recommendation. People, who enjoy the light and cozy mysteries, will find it satisfying. With impressive vocabulary, it is a masterpiece from every viewpoint.
