Review of The Blues Guitar of Ozymandias Jax
Ozymandias Jax, popularly known as Ozee, is born into poverty. His wayward father runs off before his birth, and his mother is the daughter of a preacher. She had fallen in love with a sleazy conman from the church. Life as a ‘latchkey’ child proves difficult till Ozee discovers his talent and the beauty of music.
Many years later, Ozee is making a name for himself in Hollywood and slowly rising to fame. He is engaged to an ex-veteran Latina from work. He then decides to help investigate the numerous victims murdered by a killer known only as Cyclops, solely because of the particular method of leaving bullet holes on the victims’ foreheads. Ozee disregards the advice of his close friends and makes plans with the FBI to capture the culprit. Meanwhile, crime and carnal desires diminish any sort of progress in their society, and soon, a war comes knocking. It seems that no one is safe, and anyone could be the next victim. How does Ozee fit into the whole picture? The Blues Guitar of Ozymandias Jax by Lars Jensen fits the description of a classic, engaging mystery.
I found a few positive aspects in this book. I admire the delicate manner used to arrange the plot. This helped to maintain an air of suspense throughout the book. Though the time setting is in the future, the author abandons the idea of advanced innovations and embraces the countless issues that humanity could face if things do not change for the better. The mystery kept me on my toes, and I kept guessing different outcomes till the shocking revelation made during the plot twist.
I only discovered a few errors, and this shows proof that the book was professionally edited. The main characters especially are well-rounded and very down-to-earth. Ozee’s humility and determination, combined with his constant urge to protect his loved ones, make him a fierce personality. But he is far from perfect because he often acts without restraint. I believe this makes his character seem more relatable. It is obvious that characters like him and Anna have gained a distinct sense of maturity that is absent at the beginning of the book.
I especially enjoyed the parts from the murderer’s point of view. They helped me to gain a much clearer insight into the characters. I only discovered a minor negative aspect in this book. I believe there were a lot of random time skips throughout the book. Though it helped that these time jumps were properly indicated, I believe that the plot could have been arranged better to reveal everything less confusingly gradually.
Due to all the positive points listed above, I rate this book four out of four stars. I believe the rating is justified because the author did an excellent job in putting different elements together to craft this entertaining book. Despite the massive cliffhanger at the end, a lot of burning questions were answered. I recommend this book to lovers of crime and mystery novels. Also, I recommend it to anyone with interest in jazz music.
