Review of Thin Places
Finn has spent the last few years in prison working as a porter and is looking forward to being released soon. In prison, he meets Calvery, who is on death row. Calvery asks Finn to locate his daughter, Chloe, let her know that he is an innocent man, and help her find a treasure. Finn promises, but he is not sure if he will keep the promise because he wants to get back to his wife and daughter, Lacy. Before Finn is released from prison, he finds out his mother is dying from cancer, and his wife has filed for divorce. Not knowing whether to believe Calvery, Finn wonders if an innocent man is being executed. Upon his release from prison, Finn discovers that his wife has a new boyfriend, Lacy is scared of him, and he realizes he no longer has a family. At this time, he decides to keep his promise to Calvery and searches for Chloe to tell her that her father was executed while claiming to be innocent of murder. Was Calvery innocent?
Thin Places by Diane Owens Prettyman is an enjoyable book full of suspense and action. The author takes the reader into the mind of a criminal and the hopelessness they feel in prison. It made me ask myself what hope death row prisoners have when they wake up each day. I could feel Finn’s uncertainties as he tried to come to terms with the realities of life after a prison term. People who have been to prison often tend to go back to the life they knew before because it is familiar and more comfortable. The author has done a fantastic job showing Finn’s struggles to keep clean and fulfill his promise to Calvery. I could feel Chloe’s embarrassment and shame in having a father who was executed for being a murderer. I enjoyed the humor Diane Owens Prettyman used with phrases like “Poor guy’s a taco short of a Mexican plate.”
The only thing that disappointed me about this book was that the author suddenly dropped one of the characters at the end of the book. I cannot say too much about this without giving away a spoiler, but suddenly, this one character is not mentioned anymore, and I do not know what happened to them.
I am happy to say that this book has been professionally edited, as it only has a handful of minor errors that a professional editor could have easily missed. Overall, I am satisfied with this book and gladly give it 4 out of 4 stars. I have no reason to give this enjoyable book fewer stars.
I recommend this book to mature adults who enjoy romance and crime-thriller novels. The book does contain some non-borderline profanity and religious content. If these types of content offend you, you may want to avoid this book.
