[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Dead Lockdown" by J. David Ross.]
Imagine being wrongfully convicted of a crime you did not commit and ending up in a maximum-security prison. The daily fights, death threats, lewd acts and all-around violence surrounds you but, add in flesh eating reanimated corpses that will stop at nothing to make you their next meal with a thirst for blood that goes beyond imagination, and you have Dead Lockdown by J. David Ross.
Jim Delaura, former NASA astronaut, began his day like many others, visiting a school full of eager children ready to learn about Mars. The children are excited to be able to hold some fragments from Mars and Jim is too until one of the fragments goes missing. A race to find this missing item and the dangers of the fragments becomes all too clear as Jim becomes more concerned.
David Roth, aka Roamin, is locked away wrongfully accused of a crime. After an impromptu meeting and fight with the leader of a neo-Nazi group, Roamin is locked up in protective custody for his own safety. As days pass in the boring cell, Roamin begins to realize that no guards have been present for a while and things seem strange. An ungodly sound, like screeching tires, rings throughout the cells and strangeness turns into terror as the undead start to fill the halls, turning everyone they encounter into mindless, flesh eating, machines.
With only a few survivors left, can Roamin and his new alliance find a way out of the prison and stay alive? Or will this event be released into the world and become a deadly global pandemic of unforeseen heights?
Dead Lockdown by J. David Ross is a wild, heart pumping story that takes you from a peaceful school into a gory, blood-filled prison with no exit in sight. I found the novel very intriguing and highly different from other zombie stories, with characters that you grow to love and root for. It thrust me into an already hectic, deadly life of being in a maximum-security prison and quickly introduced a new deadly enemy that quickly took over the jail. I enjoyed the subtle breaks that let me learn the back stories of the main characters and gave me an understanding of how they came to be in jail. The author’s wonderful descriptions allowed me to see every detail and I was almost able to hear and smell the surroundings throughout the story.
The only thing that was negative were the numerous grammatical errors. It did not seem to be edited well. I did thoroughly enjoy the novel, even with the errors, and would love to read the sequel Dead Lockdown 2, Red Eye to Hell. For these reasons, I rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars.
Dead Lockdown would be perfect for any zombie, blood loving mature audience that doesn’t mind foul language. This story perfectly blends violence, gore, and profanity with seamless storytelling and strong characters.
