The Hip Shot by Michael L. Miller describes everything from religious belief, mistreatment of people, and misogyny, to racial integration. After having had their fun in life, right from women to their interests and career, the four friends, Mervin, Boot, Perch, and Skeeter, retire to their hometown, Preston in South Carolina. When August Ellington (Skeeter) doesn't show up for their Friday happy hour at Bill's Corner, worry begins to set in among the sexagenarians.

Hazel Owens is a retired celebrity in the punk music world who runs a studio in Preston. This studio was left in her possession by her late friend Douglas Jonathan Clarke. She becomes uneasy when her partner, Dr. Carol Baxley, doesn't return her message. A murder case in Preston town has everyone thinking if it could be related to the sudden disappearance of August Ellington and Carol Baxley. A determined Sergeant Barbara Lowrie, Chief of police; Holt, Detective Stanton, and other officials far and near combine forces to get to the root of the matter. Could the murder case be connected to the sudden disappearance of Carol Bexley and August Ellington? Find out.

I'm amazed by Michael's skillful introduction and development of each character, providing a backstory of their lives, including achievements and struggles to get to their current positions. Each character was unique, playing a functional role and combining their favorable traits to solve the mind-draining puzzle. The Hip Shot shows in detail just how deep a friendship can go and its essence. The book was everything a movie should be and more, having very realistic characters. I appreciate the simplicity of the terms in the book, which made reading the book easy. Sure, there were moments in the book where the suspense was supreme. However, the author didn't linger on the story for so long.

I found nothing to hate about this book, leaving no space for negative thoughts while I read through it. However, I discovered minimal subjective errors occasionally while I read. Regardless, it doesn't reduce the excellent worth of the book; it was professionally edited. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

This book is suitable for quite a wide readership. Nevertheless, it contains scenes and conversations which might stir up disagreements with individuals, such as the ill-treatment of women and the supremacy of men. I recommend The Hip Shot to those who are enthusiastic about crime resolution in society and unraveling mysteries.

I tend not to be a worrier, but someone not showing up for a gathering at which they were a previous regular would have even me upset. I,too, am glad to see a woman in a position of leadership is a nice touch. It certainly bodes well for the novel.

There would be a lot of suspense incorporated into this book that would keep readers at the edge of their seats, the author making a female a lead in this narrative is worth admiring. I'll love to know how the book ended.

This book sounds like a good read for me. I like the suspense, and I want to know more about how the four friends kept their friendship for so long.
