Sacrifice is not something that everyone is willing to do, yet The Dead S.I.T.E propelled sacrifice to the forefront in a manner that I have not seen since the days of the Bible. Yes, this is a book about zombies, but I got more than I bargained for. Mr. Wolk immediately throws you into a battle between zombies and the inhabitants of a planet, and the zombies are greater in number. The focus of the battle shifts to a small group of warriors who are trying to make it to the safety of their spacecraft, commanded by Phoenix. Yes, there is some space travel involved! Once inside, the ship changes from the scheduled course, and the five couples and dog aboard splash into the Dead Sea. They find themselves at an excavation site in Israel as “The One Who Watches” directs their path. So begins their mission on planet Earth.
The aliens, with their super intelligent minds, quickly adapt to the English language, even though some communication still manages to confuse them. They become members of the excavation crew and things appear normal until skulls that bear the same injury and what would have been the same facial expressions upon death are unearthed. The aliens look to one another and immediately know what is about to happen. Now their assignment becomes clear: the survival of Earth depends on them helping this group of people survive.
Strap on your seatbelt as wonder after wonder unfolds in the pages of this book. Seth, one of the youngest of the aliens possesses an extraordinary gift, and it is his willingness to obey "The One Who Watches” that saves the Earthlings and his fellow aliens from total annihilation. His wisdom guides them from the excavation fields to the bottom of the Dead Sea to discover the horror that is about to befall civilization in the form of a zombie revolution. He also stumbles upon a Bible and reads the story of Jesus, the crucifixion, and the sacrifice He made for mankind by shedding his blood. Somehow he realizes that he will also become a sacrifice to save many. As if fighting zombies is not enough, traitorous actions from those filled with greed result in the loss of many innocent lives. Their pleasure is short lived; however, as the ones they seek to rule rip the lives from their bodies.
As the group finds itself at the point of defeat, warriors from centuries past miraculously rise up to help annihilate the enemy. According to religious legend, these same warriors lost a battle at this very spot many ages ago and it is their destiny to win this time. No war is won without sacrifice, so once again it is time for an innocent to shed blood for humanity. Now is the time for “The One Who Watches” to complete the mission, and I must say that this, to me, is the most amazing and touching part of the story.
This is a short story about zombies, not the type of writing that I normally read, but I am glad that I experienced this adventure. The zombies are a part of the story, but the author managed to squeeze so much more into the pages of this book. It has Biblical history; greed; love; sacrifice; space travel; and even some humorous events involving sex. I give this book a “four out of four” and I highly recommend it to those who love a good story. There is something in there for every reader.
