Hattie Vavaseur is a thrilling supernatural novel written by M. Rebecca Wildsmith. It is her debut novel. The titular character is the protagonist of the story, who is old and has forgetfulness. But she is too proud to ask anyone about the things she has forgotten.

After attending a funeral, Hattie is given a taxi ride by a chauffeur named Bertram to some place that she has no idea about. She is too arrogant to ask, and they stand in front of a big mansion. The master of the mansion never comes in front of her but provides her with good food and lets her stay in the most suitable room, which is pink in colour. Hattie hates any shade of pink but stays because the master insisted she stay. Hattie has no idea where she is or many things related to the past, but she is afraid to ask anyone about it as she is too proud to do so. A forced meeting with an occultist named Vamelda takes things in a different direction. Vamelda promises Hattie that she would help her restore her memories. Now Hattie has to uncover many truths along the way. She even tries to solve the murder mystery of a salesman too.

With lots of twists and turns, I loved how the author used lofty language to describe the nineteen hundred. I was in awe of the words used by the author to describe different events. The clear and crisp word choices actually made me feel like I had visited the place during the nineteenth century. The boater hats, the estates, the horse riding, all were really fascinating. The romance in the novel was really touching. The tragedy that befell Hattie made my heart crumble. At first I only saw Hattie as a snobby, arrogant English woman, but later her true, tender-hearted self was revealed, which made her one of my favourite characters. Vamelda was another favourite character of mine. Her sense of humour was something that made me chuckle.

There was nothing that I disliked in this book. I loved every minute I spent reading this supernatural mystery. I did not find any errors, so I think the book was professionally edited.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for its extremely wonderful narration of the story, the character building, and the mystery. I would recommend it to those who love mystery novels intertwined with fantasy and a tinge of romance.
