Review of E M P Honeymoon
Kelly wanders into a gift shop but doesn't buy a gift. Instead, she stumbles into a computer lab, and as she looks around in surprise, a hand clamps her mouth as another pulls her back. But she knows a bit of martial art, thanks to her brother. So she kicks and frees herself from the bad guy and runs into the street. The bad guys, a dozen or so of them, give chase. Even so, Kelly outsmarts them, finding a taxi just as she needs one.
Kelly calls her husband, who doesn't pick up the phone. In a panic, she calls her brother, and phone calls ensue, some to the CIA and others to influential people in high places. For the newlyweds, Tom and Kelly, the honeymoon stops. But they don't mind. Tom is a cop who loves police work, and Kelly is an adventurous woman. Then two lovely women from America knock on Kelly's door one evening to help fight the terrorists and protect the newlyweds. As for the terrorists, they have trained hard for their mission and are currently masquerading as tourists in the Caribbean highlands as they wait for their next order.
Dorothy May Mercer's E M P Honeymoon is a fast-paced story told in the third person point of view. I like the flaws Dorothy May Mercer put in her characters. For instance, the villain doesn't know east from the west on the map, yet he's the most feared man in the book.
In E M P Honeymoon, every scene not only ties neatly to the next one but also advances the plot. For example, in one scene, a professor asks what will happen to America if a power grid is knocked out and the power goes out.
In regards to the aspects of the book that I didn't like, in the course of my reading, I came across clichés. Or rather the phrases that I consider clichés, notably "what took you so long?" I've repeatedly heard this from movies and novels so much that it puts me off sometimes. Another one is "he was armed to the teeth." Also, I don't particularly appreciate that the good guys won all the battles. As far as I'm concerned, the bad guys ought to have won some battles to heighten the state of fear.
I'm rating E M P Honeymoon four out of four stars because Dorothy May Mercer did her homework on America's defense system and made the book very convincing. How she weaved the bliss of honeymoon and the threat of terrorism into this book, that too impressed me. As a reader, I also didn't come across any errors, be they grammatical or typographical.
Readers who love a story that picks up momentum right from the first page, a story that doesn't slow down at all, a story full of suspense and with a plot that is easy to follow, I'm sure they will love this book, and so I recommend it to them.
