Monk's job is to investigate in and around the London docks of Victorian times. This is a story of the abuse of young boys and is a bit complex. Perry explores social and ethical issues in this novel and she has a way of intertwining upper and lower class characters in a praiseworthy way throughout the story. This novel is a first-rate work of Victorian fiction in my opinion.
