Review of Like My Mother Before Me
Alize is a character in Naley Gonzalez's paranormal young adult book Like my mother before me. She lives her life much like any other adolescent. She skips class so she can get high with her friends. She is really skilled at volleyball and plays it with a lot of love. Her life was going as well as it could until one night when she encountered demons. Is it merely an illusion? Is she losing her mind? Does she possess any ability to communicate with the dead?
This is not a typical young adult novel where the main character is the only one who encounters obstacles. Each individual in the plot revolving around Alize had a unique life and set of challenges to overcome. Alize's brother, Elize, teases his sister but also loves her. He had a love tale of his own. Alize's closest friend, Estelle, has family issues. Despite being a grieving widower at the death of his wife, Alize's father, Gabriel, is a loving and nurturing man. Her godmother, Zoraida, is a caring person who supported Alize with her issues.
The naming of characters was impressive. The plot flowed well, with the right amount of mystery and suspense at the right moment. The characters in the novel had an emotional impact on me, which, according to the plot, caused me to feel angry, annoyed, and happy. Emotions such as confusion, love, fear, and anger are written well. The narration of the paranormal ghosts and demons made the reader imagine them easily. The narrative also addressed child maltreatment, bullying, sexual abuse, and suicide in addition to its sole concentration on paranormal events. It was enjoyable to read about the various relationships that existed between the various people. My favorite was Alize's bond with her brother, who teased her to keep her entertained and occasionally annoyed her. And when she was down, he was there to help her.
This dark fantasy story is well crafted with intriguing characters and surprising narrative turns. Every part of the story was enjoyable to me. Professional editing was done on the book. I found the relationships between all of the characters to be extremely admirable. The plot flowed at a pace that made it seem real, neither moving too quickly nor too slowly. The book did not have any negative points. Hence, I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 rating.
If you're looking for a decent paranormal young adult fiction book, I would suggest Like my mother before me . This book will appeal to anyone who appreciates a good suspense story with teen drama. Readers who are at least 16 years old can read this book.
