Cold Consequences by David Rohlfing is one of the books in the Detective Sasha Frank Mystery Series. It is the prequel to the author’s first book, Deliberate Duplicity. In this book, the story starts off with the murder of Ashley Cummins. Ashley is a young woman from a well-off family. She has a chronic pain problem due to a soccer injury. She manages this pain with the use of illicit opioids. She is out trying to purchase some of these pills when things take a deadly turn. It is up to Senior Detective Sasha Frank and his team to find out exactly what happened and who killed Ashley Cummins. Unfortunately, this isn’t the easiest of cases to solve, and there is a lot of outside pressure. Will the team be able to crack the case? You will have to read this book to find out.

This is an enjoyable story with a mix of crime and mystery. The plot is easy to follow, and the story has all of the necessary elements. It’s obvious that the author thought through the story and planned it well. There are no holes in the plot or loose strings. The amount of detail is also good. It doesn’t go too much into technicalities, but it describes things enough that it is easy to understand what is going on.

I appreciate that the book seems to be professionally edited. There are a total of five errors in the entire book, and they are all minor. None of the errors take away from the story. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t even have noticed them if I weren’t specifically looking for errors as I read.

Unfortunately, there are several pitfalls to the book. The first is that the writing is kind of monotonous. All of the characters sound almost the same when they talk. There is a slight difference between the speech of the drug dealers and the detectives, but this difference is not large enough to be able to identify anyone based on speech patterns. There is also a lot of bias within the book that sometimes gets in the way of the actual story. The characters get on little soap boxes that should have been avoided. My final critique is that there are a lot of acronyms that aren't defined first.

I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars. The book is professionally edited, and the story is good. However, I had to take away a star for the issues with the writing that I described above. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime and mystery books. There are descriptions of death, so I would not recommend the book to anyone who is squeamish.

I don’t know what to do about the opioid crisis. I am frustrated by their overuse and the problems that accompany it. Ashley was put into an impossible situation. I hope her murder is solved.

Thank you for your detailed review; you mentioned that there is a good amount of details in the book, doesn't it take away from the mystery? I don't like stories that are monotonous, so I will pass on this one.

The story is disheartening, when she was trying to come out of the pains she is passing through...death came her way.

The circumstance surrounding Ashley's death is very disheartening, I really hope she gets the justice she deserves. I am not a huge fan of crime novels, however, I would have to commend such an interesting review. Great job!

Though I haven't read any part of this series, I'd like to read this particular one. The storyline is interesting and suspense-filled. I'd really like to know who killed Ashley Cummins.

I hope the flaws don't hinder the reader's enjoyment too much, as this seems like an interesting thriller that hase a premise in a very serious problem. Thank you for your great review!
