Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith was an enjoyable read and I would most likely classify it as a paranormal mystery. In the first few chapters the main character, Hattie, is trying to solve her own mystery and is somewhat convinced that she is losing her mind. As the reader, I too felt confused and was wondering where the story was going. By chapter 4 I was hooked and had to keep reading to see how the story would turn out. As the book continues, the mystery deepens and other characters become involved. With each new character adding to the drama and making this book extremely intriguing. The book is set in England during the early 1920s, so it does involve a bit of imagination to picture yourself in the past, but I enjoy books from that era so it was an enjoyable read for me. The book also focuses on seances and communication with spirits through a medium in the town where Hattie lives. While none of the paranormal part of the story is detailed, dark, or overwhelming, it is a huge part of the story.

I enjoyed the mystery and was so frustrated with myself for not figuring out the initial mystery by chapter 4 or 5. It was a fairly easy read and was perfect for reading over the summer. I would even suggest this for a great vacation read. I would definitely feel confident suggesting this book to others for light, enjoyable reading.

The only negative I could find in this book is that it contains a lot of huge vocabulary words. At one point I think I was using my digital dictionary as often as I did in High School when reading assignments. This would definitely be appropriate for reading if you were studying for standardized tests or trying to up your vocabulary. Vocabulary words such as maladroit, ichorous, obsequious, opprobrium, temerity was used throughout the book; this may be frustrating to those who do not have large vocabularies, or do not want to look up various vocabulary while reading. I didn’t find it to be awful because I have a digital dictionary on my e-reader.

I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was remarkably well written and was edited nicely. I didn’t notice any spelling mistakes or huge grammatical mistakes.

I highly recommend this book for a relaxing and enjoyable reading experience. There are a few mysteries that occur throughout, and while they are not huge, they are enjoyable and fun to figure out. I would consider this a light read because there isn’t any deep thinking or overwhelming text involved. There does seem to be very heavy vocabulary throughout the book, but nothing that would make me list this as a difficult read. There does not seem to be any religious overtones or sexual scenes or any profanity. The book would be appropriate for teenagers through adulthood.
