Jake Miller is a captivating journey into the world of crime, law enforcement and adventure. The story follows the life of a detective called Jake Miller. Jake's world is thrown into chaos once an explosion at his residence claims the life of his wife Mary. The detective immediately dedicates his time to finding his wife's killer in order to get justice for her death. This unpredictability leads Jake into further trouble as he faces more enemies than he had originally imagined.

Liutenant Kaufman, the head of the criminal investigation department, commissions some of Jake's colleagues to unravel the mystery. Jake shortlists several criminals who could have likely ended Mary's life. Liutenant Kaufman helps Jake in narrowing down to one suspect only. Arnie Marks is the man under investigation since Jake had just testified against him in court a few hours prior to the accident. The team suffers huge blows as one of the colleagues dies in a grisly car accident while another commits suicide after learning that Jake had betrayed him.

However, it turns out that the operation is not in vain. The team unravels a devious plot by an infamous lawyer and a selfish girlfriend to end Jake's career and eventually lock him up in prison. Despite all the effort, Jake remains nowhere close to finding the man who planted the explosives at his house. It takes a fresh team and a new perspective into the case to finally catch the man who took Mary's life.

The author, Billy Ray Williams, has done an excellent job in creating a suspense-filled plot. The story is completely unpredictable, which is a good thing. Williams has successfully managed to keep the reader hooked to the story as one keeps on speculating the killer only to find out that they are completely wrong. He has mastered the element of surprise in his story as most events in the book are not foreseen by the reader.

On the downside, the paragraphing of the book is not appealing. Some of the paragraphs are as long as one whole page. For example, page forty-two and page twenty-nine all consisted of one large paragraph. There were a lot of speech marks enclosing conversations involving more than two people in this long paragraphs which can easily make the reader lose track of the development of the story.

A rating of four out of four stars is fair enough. I did not note any spelling or grammar mistakes in the book and so it is fair to say that the book is well edited. The plot is well executed and leaves no stone unturned while being careful to keep the reader in suspense until the very end.

Jake Miller is a good fit for people who love books with themes such as: crime, action, adventure and mystery. The book does not give anything away until the very end when it answers the big question: who killed Mary? The suspense and the long course to justice for Mary is bound to keep the reader engaged till the end.
