Mission Lisbon: The V-1 Double Cross is a fascinating, fictional story of spying, double-crossing and espionage that takes place during World War 2. The main character, Luke Garvan, is a respected Chief Inspector of Police in England who is reassigned to work for the MI5, the British Secret Service. Garvan is sent on a mission to Portugal to ensure the safe passage of French scientist, Jean Giscard, to England. Major Spencer Hall, a detective, and Joyce Leader a double-agent, are both accompanying Garvan on this mission.
Giscard is fleeing from the Gestapo and the Abwehr, the Nazi Secret Service. Coerced into working for the Germans, and fearing his family’s safety, Giscard worked with other scientists on one of Hitler’s top secret projects, developing extremely dangerous weaponry. However, when he realizes the gravity of the evil plans that they have for the weapons, he escapes to Portugal, which is a neutral country in the war. With him, he brings the plans of the weapons that they were creating. Berlin obviously sends people after him, so Garvan and his team need to get him to safety before time runs out.
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is a maze of undercover activities, with both the British and their German counterparts trying to gather intelligence on each other. To add to the complications of the British Intelligence, there seems to be a traitor amongst them.
This book belongs to the crime, thriller, mystery and suspense genre, although it could be said to belong to the historical fiction genre as well. The author, Toby Oliver creates several interesting characters, and weaves a captivating tale of bravery and deceit, at a time when loyalties are always in question.
The one thing I must admit is that I got lost a bit in the beginning with the secret service jargon and the names of the secret services, for example, MI5 and MI6. I also never really knew much about the intricacies of the Second World War, though as this book shows, wars are not only won by bullets alone.
I found this book to be an absorbing and exciting mystery. I learnt that during a war you are never sure of who is truly on your side, and who may be double-crossing you, and that at the end of the day it is best to trust no one. This sort of book would interest those who like to read crime and mystery novels, and it would also interest those who like reading about history, particularly the world wars. The characters as well as the storyline were well developed and interesting. For this reason I am giving the book four out of four stars.
