[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Paz Recovery" by Roy Voss.]
The Paz Recovery: The Abduction of Sonja Paz is a fictional, action-thriller novel written by R. E. Voss. The book consists of fifty-one chapters that exhibit human courage, bravery, and loyalty. It follows Brock VanMarter, an ex-U.S. Navy Seal, who now works at his father's construction company but isn't completely done with that military life.
Mr. VanMarter's company is approached by the CIA concerning a job they are bidding on in Mexico. The CIA intends to ensure that they get the job so that the CIA can use it as a cover to investigate a possible terrorist threat. Brock is asked to involve his former love interest, Sonja Paz, in the investigation as she is an ex-assassin with resources. The plot is then complicated when Sonja and some other women are kidnapped by a human trafficking group, and her current lover, Alfredo, is shot in the process. With Sonja's life on the line and with the help of his resident genius hacker, Tom Short, Brock puts together a team to rescue her and uncover those behind her abduction while helping the CIA with their investigation. Who is behind the kidnapping? Who are the terrorists? Will Sonja Paz be saved in time? Find out in this fantastic book.
This book comes with a lot of positives. The language and vocabulary used were easy to understand and follow. I also learned some new words like buoy, squall, expat, etc. I liked the character of Brock. Despite being a typical "manly man", having served in the Navy, he shows a vulnerable side when his loved ones are in danger. I also loved the dynamic between some of the characters; for instance, Calvin and Liz had conversations that were very engaging and, at times, downright hilarious. Also, Burton and Brock share a brotherhood that is easy to recognize and appreciate. The author does a good job of generating multiple seemingly unrelated plot lines and ties them into one impressive story that is filled with suspense, intrigue, and a healthy dose of humor to make a fantastic book.
I could not find any major negative aspects. However, I did find a host of errors in the book. It was not professionally edited. For this reason, I deduct a single star and rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I was completely satisfied with the book because of its compelling and action-packed tale. Thus, I am unable to give it a lower rating.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers and likes a bit of suspense in their action novels.
