Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Imagine yourself at a funeral, but you have no idea whose it is. Next you meet a man that is there to take you to where you are staying, but you have no idea who he is, where you are going, or why. This is how the scene is set in Chapter One of Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith. This book takes you on a journey of finding out all about Hattie. Who and where she is now, and all about her past. In order to find out the mystery of her past, and all the people she has met in her present, she comes to rely upon and eventually become friends with Vamelda: Medium of the Occult. Vamelda can actually see the spirits of people who have passed on and has made a living by it, though she puts on great theatrical shows for her customers. In discovering Hattie’s story, you are introduced to wonderful supporting characters who all have interwoven connections with each other. By unearthing Hattie's past, you also unearth the stories and pasts of the other characters in the book.
I think that Wildsmith did an excellent job with the character development of not just the main characters, but also the supporting characters of this book. They each had their own stories and histories that were interwoven parts of the story. Each character introduced in the story, other than Vamelda’s clients, had a part to play to solve the mysteries in the book. They each found out different things that helped fit the puzzle pieces together.
There is only one thing negative that I can think of about the book. I did find the sentences in the beginning of the book to be too wordy. In some paragraphs there were what I would describe as borderline run on sentences. I think that some of these would have been better as two separate sentences. With that being said, there is nothing else negative I can say.
I think that this book was edited extremely well. I found no editing errors in this book. This made it thoroughly enjoyable to read this book. I definitely rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Every time I thought I had the answer to a new question that would pop up, I almost always was wrong. It was never the obvious choice or answer. This is something that kept the story exciting and you couldn't wait to turn the page to find out what would happen next.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes an ever-changing mystery that needs to be solved. For those that like romance, there are a few love stories entwined in this book, though not all turn out “happily ever after”. This may also appeal to people who like the occult. It has the draw of being able to see, speak and interact with the spirit world. You also got to see the darker sides of spirits, like you see the darker sides of some people. This was a highly enjoyable read that always kept me guessing. Highly recommend!
