Hattie Vavaseur is a supernatural thriller novel by M. Rebecca Wildsmith. M. Rebecca Wildsmith debuts with this novel. The titular character, Hattie Vavaseur, is the protagonist of the story. She is old and shows signs of forgetfulness and is too proud for her own good to seek help about things she is not clear about.

The novel begins with a woman observing others after attending a funeral. Hattie, who is waiting for the taxi to come and fetch her, is given a ride by a chauffeur named Bertram. Hattie has no idea of this place and is too self-conscious of her mental state to ask about her bearings as they stand in front of a big mansion. Hattie, as she starts living in the large white house, along with a master who has a temper. Hattie embarks on a journey of self-discovery about herself and an adventure that follows as she uncovers the truth.

Hattie Vavaseur has three intriguing plot lines that intertwine as the story unfolds. It also has lots of twists that keep the reader entertained and hooked. Hattie Vavaseur has a large vocabulary and provides insight into occultism. The narration is fluid and easy to follow with the choice of words M. Rebecca Wildsmith uses it to describe the nineteenth century. I could easily envision the story without any difficulty because of the beautiful choice of words by M. Rebecca Wildsmith. Hattie’s character has progressed from a snobbish woman to a tender-hearted person. The Master is one of the interesting characters whom I have thoroughly enjoyed reading as Hattie does discover. He is a warm-hearted person who develops a bond with Hattie. Another funny character is Vamelda, whom I have absolutely loved. She is a mysterious and mischievous woman with a strange accent who does and says things for her own amusement. Hattie is forced to meet Vamelda, and the twist that comes right there makes the reader, along with Hattie, stumble on the truth.

The novel is well-written, well-edited, and thoroughly enjoyable. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars for its uniqueness and mysterious storyline, as well as a dash of humor and romance. Nothing about Hannah Vavaseur did not appeal to me. I loved the ending and am eager to enjoy more of M. Rebecca Wildsmith’s work.

Hattie Vavaseur is recommended for readers who enjoy mysteries, the supernatural, humor, and romance. The chapters are short and sweet, and the entire book can be easily read in a couple of days.
