Wraith by James R. Hannibal is action on steroids. The book opens by introducing you to the various military and civilian personnel who will play key roles in this top-secret, action-filled drama. But don’t let your guard down because you will be gripping the edge of your seat before this story ends.
Nick Baron is the intrepid military pilot who will stop at nothing to get the job done. He and Drake Murphy are recruited to fly for a secret squadron which is developing a new type of stealth drone to be flown in war zones, in this case Iraq. The engineers and pilots are brought together at what appears to be an abandoned airbase in New Mexico. The purpose is to test the new drone, which is launched from the bay of a B-2 bomber and then retrieved back into the bay when it has completed its mission. The orders for this technology have come straight from the President and he wants it ready to deploy yesterday. But all does not go to plan.
A couple of months later they are back in New Mexico for more testing but this time Nick will not be in the chase plane following the drone, he will be in the drone itself. Then a week of test flights is cut down to one test and suddenly they are off to the Persian Gulf for the real thing. The drone is sent out on its mission and all is going well until …
Military books are not usually my thing but this book just kept jumping out at me and I was not disappointed. James Hannibal has created some memorable characters in this story. They are heroes but they are also real people, with real fears and real questions about their abilities. They are also tenacious in completing the challenges before them. There is more to these guys and gals than just a kind of military machoism. That being said, I was nearly breathless at the end with anticipation of the outcome. I’m not sure if this story is based on real events but it is obvious that the author knows what he is talking about and has a great ability to make the settings of the story and the characters all come alive in the reader’s mind.
There is plenty of action to go around in this book, from death-defying flying maneuvers to equipment malfunctions to hand-to-hand combat, it’s all here. Oh, and don’t forget the big, giant missiles flying around over your head. Those who are fans of military stories, flying stories or just plain, old adventure should really enjoy this book. I’m putting James Hannibal on my go-to author list and hope to read more of his books soon. This one is definitely a winner for me. I’m giving it 4 out of 4 stars.
