Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Is there life beyond death? If yes, then what does this afterlife look like? Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is a charming and funny story revolving around the lead character Hattie Vavaseur, as she learns to navigate her afterlife. The story is set in 1920s England. The whole writing gives the vintage feel of the contemporary classics. The author wastes no time in warming up. From the beginning, there is an element of mystery embedded in the story. As Hattie Vavaseur deals with her unreliable memory, she is not deterred to ask questions and probe into things that intrigue her in this strange setting she finds herself in with no collection of how she got there. As the story progresses, she discovers a lot of secrets with the help of strange characters who challenge her preconceived notions about life, death, and the connection between these two realms of existence.
The story doesn't get too trapped in its paranormal setting. It has many different shades that make the story rich in its content, keeping the reader hooked with constant twists and turns. The story is set up very nicely in the first half, following which it picks up pace. The author has incorporated many elements into it; including paranormal thriller, murder mystery, romance, and deception. Even though the backdrop of the story is dark, the writing is funny, sometimes at the expense of its own major sequences. This imparts a very endearing quality to the writing throughout.
There are a lot of positive aspects to this book. The theme is very fresh and interesting. The amalgamation of various themes into this story is done brilliantly. The writing is really funny throughout. The writing gives the feel of vintage classics, which gives a fresh experience to the readers. The book is really engaging throughout. It regularly springs up new twists that will keep you hooked. The air of mystery around the characters and this world of dead people works really well.
There are no negative aspects to this book.
The book has been edited exceptionally well. I didn't find any grammatical or syntactical errors in it. The book contains no profanity. The book has sexual references. I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars for its fresh and intriguing theme and storyline. The writing is amazing, integrating so many elements together so well without creating a mess of it.
I would recommend this book to those who are into thrillers and mystery novels. It will definitely appeal more to those who are looking for stories that are different from the more contemporary stories with a more normal setting. This book is definitely a page-turner and will keep you hooked throughout.
