Review of The Mayan Legacy

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Mayan Legacy" by Jody Summers.]
An ancient Mayan apocalypse prediction was incorrect because leap years had not been factored into calculating when a galactic alignment would occur. When the tree of life, sun, moon, and earth aligned, a fiery dragon would breathe on the planet. Chuck Kohler is a scientist who discovers a rabbit-shaped asteroid headed toward our planet, and they have only 74 days to stop it. Jeremy and his sometimes girlfriend, Valerie, wonder if what he saw during a near-death experience has anything to do with the asteroid and if they can help NASA redirect it. The Mayan Legacy, by Jody Summers, tells the story of the populace's reaction to the threat of destruction. What will happen if the asteroid hits? Is it possible for anyone or anything to survive? Can Jeremy convince anyone he is telling the truth about a vision he had while under the influence of alcohol? Was the Mayan Calendar only off by four years?
I have read many books about the apocalypse, but I have to say this is the best one I have come across. The book has many different plots: stalking, hired assassins, romance, and space exploration, to name a few, and Jody Summers does an excellent job moving between each of them. As a book lover, I appreciate that several characters turned to books to relieve their worries and stress. This thought-provoking book made me stop and think of how I would react if I knew our planet would be destroyed in a couple of months. It also made me wonder what it would be like if I were to survive. All the characters are fully developed, and I could feel their fear, disbelief, love, uncertainty, trust, conflict, worry, and indecisiveness. The author's descriptions made it easy for me to visualize the soaring white cliffs, crystal blue lakes, dark green trees, fires, and the rabbit-shaped asteroid, to name a few.
I disliked nothing about this book, but I was disappointed that the author had not had it professionally edited. Although many errors were made throughout the book, they did not distract from my reading enjoyment.
I am giving this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars because of the number of mistakes it contained. The plot was realistic, and I felt that the events could occur if we were ever faced with the possibility of an asteroid hitting us. I appreciated that this book did not contain aliens or monsters like many other books on this topic.
This book will be enjoyed by mature readers interested in the Mayan culture, the apocalypse, crime, and romance. It has something for fans of many genres. The characters' reactions had varied scientific and religious beliefs; however, they still pulled together for the good of all, making me believe that the book is appropriate for all religious and non-religious audiences. I will caution younger and sensitive readers that the book contains non-borderline profanity.
