Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Elderly Hattie, the main protagonist of the novel Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith, is a headstrong, prim, and proper lady of class who despises all shades of pink. Unfortunately, Hattie is suffering from memory loss, yet is too proud to inquire about anything happening around her. In the opening, Hattie is leaving a funeral to stay at a mansion, which apparently she is looking into buying from the gruff and sometimes impolite old man who owns it. Whilst on the journey to obtain her memories Hattie befriends many unsuspecting characters, such as a young boy, a butler, a spiritual medium who she comes to rely on very much, and surprisingly becomes more than friends with the man of the house. Strange things happen along the way colliding into an exciting ending filled with love, envy, demonic rituals, and clarity. Wildsmith has created an exciting mystery written like the classics whilst maintaining an individual sense of style that entrances the reader.
I found this book to be positively amazing. I did not want to stop reading it. Usually, there are points within a book where I need to take a break from the characters, the writing style, the annoying situations that arise, and the list goes on. However, Wildsmith truly created something enjoyable enough for me to plow through without the need to stop due to the contents of the book. I found the story to be refreshing, entertaining, and an overall positive experience.
Honestly, there were no negative moments in this book! While it is rare that a book is completely flawless in the reader's eyes, I found nothing distasteful about this book. The supporting characters were given as much detail and attention as the main characters making it as though I could picture them and their actions. This book will go in the pile of “favorites,” rather than just the “read” pile.
Not surprisingly my praise for Hattie Vavaseur continues. I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The attention to detail truly paints the image of 1920’s London, the attire, their mannerisms, and their speech. It appears as though Wildsmith has truly done the research required for this historical fiction. By far one of my favorite genres personally – I love a good timepiece such as this. I would be interested in reading other works from Wildsmith in the future.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves an unusual love story, a classical mystery, books with supernatural elements, or a period piece. This story is actually one of romance with a happy ending without making you blush while reading it. It is a different time period portrayed here after all. The writing reflects that and is clean enough for all ages to enjoy. Those who enjoy Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, or Gaslight mysteries would be in for a real treat with this book.
