Unpredictability is something I've always loved about detective stories. The discovery of clues, the follow-ups, the twists and turns, and the answers have always intrigued me. The Last Hurrah is one such book written by Judilee Butler and GaGa Gabardi. It is in the crime thriller genre and represents book one of the Phoebe Korneal Mystery Series. In the book's opening scenes, a call is put through to the police department; apparently, a county resident, Augusta, had stumbled upon Old Al's body in the early hours of the morning at the Sunshine mine.

Sheriff Joe and his deputy, Pheobe, decide to check the murder out. When they arrive, they are tempted to rule the murder due to natural causes; however, Pheobe picks up some clues; she notices things out of the ordinary and items that are too close together. After documenting everything, they began a low-key investigation to ensure no foul play was involved. Pheobe, who is inclined towards detective work, takes up the case. She employs all resources available to chase down the leads she has discovered. What would she find? What are Augusta and Hank hiding? Does Old Al have a family? How did he die? These are some of the mysteries solved within the pages of this book.

I've always had a soft spot for detective stories. When I read the description of this book, I knew I had to read it next; I'm also glad it turned out to be a good decision. The book's plot was simple, relatable, and easy to understand. The story began at a slow pace, mainly because the authors wanted the readers to get familiar with the characters; however, the story picked up as it progressed. The character development was top-notch; there were a few characters in the story, and an in-depth description of each was rendered. I also liked how realistic the story was; although some of the locations were fictional, the description of the gold rush and land features tended to be too close to reality. The language used was simple; I'm sure readers would have no difficulty comprehending it.

There was nothing I could pinpoint as a negative aspect of this book. The plot and characters were meticulously drafted. There was nothing rushed about the story; unnecessary flair was also avoided, which only added to its realistic nature. I commend the authors for their extensive research before writing down this story. Pheobe's character was easily my favourite; she's strong, resourceful, and loyal. There were a few minor errors in this book, but I believe it was professionally edited.

The Last Hurrah receives a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 for its well-thought-out plot and precise delivery. I recommend this book to readers interested in crime thrillers, mystery tales, and detective stories.

I didn’t realize, or maybe I just didn’t pay enough attention, that this was part of a series. I think that since the number of error is low and the research was so well-done, as soon as I finish the series I am currently reading, I will pick this up.

What intrigues me about detective books is the way they make me think deeply to uncover a plot. I also marvel at how little details can change a whole lot in a case. Great review.

I love detective stories and your intro just happens to make me interested. I have a feeling Phoebe is going to the main detective on this case despite working on her boss. Clues, description, suspects are things I'm definitely looking out for. Nice review.

I always admire detectives. Anytime I read a crime thriller book, I find myself feeling anxious while wondering if the detective will find the missing piece of the puzzle. Their ability to uncover mysteries is quite commendable. This is a well-written review. Well done!

Phoebe must have been very intelligent not to rule out the death as a natural cause. I love how interesting the book seems all thanks to your review.
