The Demoralization of Romeo Jones by M. Paul Rivers is a crime book about selfishness and exploitation. It presents several women's unscrupulous behavior, their schemes to get money from a rich boy, and the aftermath of some past traumas. Also, the novel illustrates themes such as blackmail, sexual abuse, murder, and prison life.

Briefly, the story focuses on Romeo Dequan Jones, a high school graduate, his family life, and his experiences with different women. After his grandfather, Richard Cantrell, dies in a car accident, Romeo, his brother Raymond and his mother Sheri obtain a substantial fortune. When Romeo receives his share of the inheritance of over a million dollars, his ex-neighbor Sharhonda Willis, whom he has liked since childhood, hatches a plan to get a part of his money.

I liked the fast-paced narration, and the intriguing plot simultaneously shocked and captivated me. I loved how M. Paul Rivers gradually presented the characters and their hidden motivations and how remarkably he illustrated the different human facets when a considerable inheritance is involved. For instance, I appreciated that this novel highlighted the antithesis between depravity and innocence through the personalities of Sharhonda and her sister Girhonda. Also, I empathized with Romeo's inner struggles and humiliation from prison, and I would wish he could predict Sharhonda's true character.

The only aspects I disliked about this book are the extreme sexual abuse and Sharhonda's deprived behavior. Her sexual escapades and selfish actions disgusted me. Also, I barely read the descriptions of the human mind and body's exploitation through hypnotizing techniques and hallucinogenic drugs because I felt anger towards Shorhanda's unethical values. For example, I did not feel comfortable reading about the inhibition from Dr. Lovehard's hypnosis seminar, and I couldn't believe that Sharhonda wanted to hypnotize her 13-year-old sister.

I liked that The Demoralization of Romeo Jones taught me a valuable lesson of trust and awareness, even of family members. I disliked the attitude of the women in Romeo's life, but I appreciated how well the author portrayed their desires and motivations. I only rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it was not professionally edited. I discovered numerous punctuation and typographical errors while reading it.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy crime books with plot twists. It is perfect for those interested in the mindset of persons who experienced traumatic experiences but not for those sensitive to sexual assault and brutal death. Also, The Demoralization of Romeo Jones is suitable for a mature audience due to its non-borderline profanity and extreme pornographic content.
