Review of Even the Dead Won't Tell You the Truth
Is it possible to communicate with the dead and be sane? How are you sure it's not an evil spirit you are talking to? Chip Reichenthal weaves a beautiful story around the afterlife and ''spirit mediumship'' in his book, Even the Dead Won't Tell You the Truth.
The plot revolves around Richie Leclaire, who, in a bid to solve the murder case of his blossom friend, Susan Hart, and free Jimmy Beldar from false accusation, utilizes his ability to communicate with the dead. As the plot unfolds, we can neither tell if Suzzy's killer was Jimmy, Janet, or Amelia. Richie, through the help of clues from Suzzy's late grandmother and detective Locke's support, could be able to spot the killers.
I enjoyed how the author meticulously debunks age-long myths people have believed about spirit mediumship and the afterlife. I had thought that the dead, having exited the land of the living, was up there watching over us. And that they knew hidden things and could see everything happening on earth. Well, it turns out that even the dead knows in bits. They do not know all things as I once thought. Reichenthal reminds us that the dead observe the law, too, and do not defy the law of nature.
I admire how the author weaves facts into fiction. He strategically fixes suspense into every chapter. This kept me imagining the next move. I literarily stood on my toes till I got to Chapter 16. I flowed with the character of Richie and Tara-Nicole. I love how Tara understands that her husband can bring hope, comfort, and even answers to problems through "spirit mediumship." She doesn't for once condemn or judge him.
On the other hand, Richie is compassionate, easy-going, selfless, and ready to help whenever the need arises. He goes as far as getting wounded so he can find answers to the false allegation laid against his friend, Jimmy.
More so, the author raises one of the most prevalent contemporary issues that many families have swept under the carpet, just like Suzzy's mum did. It is the issue of sibling rivalry. Amelia's intense envy and jealousy towards Susan Hart, her cousin, makes her give Suzan a hot competitive chase to outshine her.
However, I wouldn't say I liked the many emphases on the dead helping the living and the living consulting the dead. I believe the dead should be allowed to rest and not be consulted for help they cannot seemingly give. The dead have moved on into another realm; it is wise for the living to move on with their lives too.
I rest assured this book was well edited, as the errors were minimal. Due to the information about the dead and the afterlife, which was eye-opening and insightful, I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. If you want to learn more about how a psychic operates or you are a lover of nicely woven crime stories, this book was written especially for you.
