Review of A Walk Through the Grapes
A Walk Through the Grapes by David Jackson is a mystery/thriller novel set in the countryside town of Willowcreek. The story begins with the protagonist Jace Grazer returning to his hometown after years. When he arrives, he’s warmly welcomed by his family and close friends. However, he has tension between his family and friends because he abandoned them without notice. His family has a large vineyard that has been doing great lately, and his parents are keen on who to leave the vineyard after their death. Soon after his return, his elder brother Dane suggests they host a party where they can catch up with their childhood friends. However, that night did not go as planned. After getting intoxicated, the two brothers get into a fight, and Dane takes off in his truck. The following day, the town wakes up to the news of an accident that killed a farmer and critically injured his son. Dane is also reportedly missing. The story takes twists and turns about the actual happenings of that night. More questions arise when Jace starts unveiling unexpected secrets that his family does not seem to want to discuss. Where is Dane? Was it he that ran over the farmer and his son? Why is the Grazer family keeping secrets from their son? What fate awaits this family?
The plot of this book was epic. I loved the unexpected plot twists that it had. Sometimes, the author broke my heart with a plot twist only to mend it in the next chapter. Using characters’ dreams as part of the plot twists was so genius. The narration was also splendid, with a perfect flow of events. I also loved how detailed and vivid the description of events was. It made them very believable. The suspense that runs through the book is everything a mystery book should have. Each character was well developed, allowing the reader to relate and connect with them. The romance infused into the book and the love triangle that Jace found himself in also made the book more captivating.
The only thing I did not like about the book at first was that I could not understand the much attention given to the protagonist by his whole family. I felt it was not warranted and only made sense of it toward the end of the book. This was interesting because the author first created a love-hate relationship between the reader and the main character.
Overall, I think this was a good book, and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It was an excellent mystery book. Well written and exceptionally well edited to enhance its reading experience.
I would recommend the book to a mature audience who loves mystery/ thriller books with a bit of romance.
