Alìz is your average everyday teenage girl. She barely scrapes by in school, plays volleyball, and occasionally skips class with her best friend Estelle to smoke pot. But that all changes when she starts seeing her dead mother and seeing things before they happen. Alìz and her brother Ezra live with their father and lost their mother to a car accident when they were very young. The closest thing they have to a mother is their godmother Zoreida. Soon Alìz begins to see something in their house other than her dead mother. This spirit is completely different than her mom's. It is dark and malevolent and wants nothing more than to kill Alìz and steal her body. On top of all of that Alìz still has normal issues to deal with as well. From her grades in school, to volleyball, to her best friend's rapidly declining home life she kind of has her hands full. Trying to juggle all of that while still not convinced she isn't going crazy may be more than she can handle. Will Alìz be able to defeat the evil spirit that was responsible for her mother's death? Or will she go down in flames like her mother before her?

Naley Gonzalez, author of Like My Mother Before Me really did an excellent job writing this book. I love Aliz and how her character is so relatable. She reminded me a little of myself when I was that age. She is a good kid that just sometimes makes stupid decisions just like we all do at times. I love when she meets Martin, his character is just perfect for her. I love how he never doubts her no matter what happens. Ezra is such a good big brother, their silly banter and his fierce protectiveness of her make me miss my brother so much. I loved this book so much that I finished it in one sitting.

I was unable to find anything about this book I did not like. I found no errors which lead me to believe it was professionally edited. I love when a story pulls me in like this one did. There were even a few parts that had me jumping and turning on all of the lights because I was so spooked. I am very glad I read this book.

I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. The reason I am giving it a perfect rating is because I loved the story and it was written so well. This book is definitely a page turner and it will leave you wanting the story not to end.

I recommend this book to a more mature, young adult audience. The reason I say mature is due to the use of profanity, mild drug use, and one almost rape scene. If you are looking for a spooky, supernatural story to keep you on the edge of your seat then look no further.
