The Boley Twins: A Ghost Story by J. Turberville is a short novel about a set of twins that can see the dead. They help the spirits who have unfinished business in the physical world move on. The twins move in with family in a small town because their mom is worried about their safety. Their presence isn’t received well by the townspeople. There’s a darkness to this town, and many of the residents think the darkness is related to the twins. Are the twins causing the darkness, or is it something else?

I liked the idea behind this story. I love a good supernatural book. This book was complete with spirits and people who could see them. It had a good foundational plot with a problem and solution. Unfortunately, the good parts of the book stopped there. While the underlying plot was good, the story wasn’t told well. The writing itself needs a lot of improvement. It was choppy and all over the place. It would jump from one event to the next without any clear transitions or separation. The story was often confusing to follow.

The book was very clearly unedited. There were several errors that could have easily been caught just by rereading the book. I was definitely disappointed by the number of errors that I found throughout this book. The errors mixed with the overall style of writing made the book really difficult to read. I found it difficult to motivate myself to pick up the book and keep reading it.

This seemed like a book that was quick to be pushed through the publishing process once the initial writing was complete. I would suggest that the author sit down and reread it and make some edits. I would also suggest getting an editor to take a look at the book to help out. As written, it seemed like more of a draft of a story than a book that was already published.

I give this book 2 out of 5 stars. It is not the worst book I have read, so it deserved more than one star. There were a few positive aspects. However, the cons are just too much for me to recommend this book to anyone, so I could not justify giving it any more than 2 stars. If the author revised the book so that it was easier to read and free from errors, I would at that point recommend it to young adult readers with a love for the supernatural. Until that revision happens, I would suggest leaving this one on the shelf.

You explained why you gave this book only two stars very well while still telling us the better aspects of the story idea. I agree it's a good premise for a book, and I hope the author finds an editor who can help with a rewrite.

Thank you for your review, hopefully the author will give the book another round of editing. The storyline is interesting, I wonder if the twins can use their gift for good and make the townspeople see them as such. Perhaps the author just need to rewrite a thing or two to make the book better.
