Murder in the Garbage by Jerry A. Greenberg is an action packed crime fiction murder mystery. Readers follow along as Hank Boucher, a retired Navy Seal turned CIA agent, takes on an assignment in San Antonio, Texas, where military hardware and top-secret documents are stolen from a military base. After receiving the assignment and boarding a flight to Texas to meet up with Bernie Talmadge, who is the CIA leader in the investigation, Hank Boucher finds himself in a complicated scheme surrounding a waste management company and in challenging situations involving the Mafia. The pair of CIA agents coordinates with detectives from the FBI to uncover criminal conspiracies surrounding the waste management company as they strive to figure out who is responsible for these related crimes at the same time.

I enjoyed the process of reading the book as the author led us through the story unfolding from the perspectives of multiple different characters. I especially enjoyed how the narrating method successfully depicted the chaotic scenes right after discovering the murder and the subtle reactions of various characters afterwards surrounding the murder. The transitioning between several first-person point-of-views of different characters creates an intriguing feeling similar to reading a screenplay, giving insight into each individual experience of these characters.

That being said, the multiple viewpoint first person method of narration made some chapters a bit challenging to digest, especially the first few. The first reason for this being that the narrating styles and inner voices of the first two emerging characters Raoul Martez and Hank Boucher seemed very similar to me. The second reason being that for the most part, I was somewhat unfamiliar with the characters’ personalities and back stories, and only warming up to the characters when the perspective changes happened. This made it difficult for me to distinguish which characters’ storyline I was following, and I had to be constantly reminded by the titles of each chapter, which slightly took away from my overall reading experience.

I gladly rate Murder in the Garbage by Jerry A. Greenberg 5 out of 5 stars for its interesting storytelling and intriguing plot. Despite the initial confusion in terms of which storyline I was following, I still thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and mystery packed book and would not deduct a star from the book for this reason.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime fiction and appreciate a good mystery novel with an action-packed storyline. Surely Hank Boucher's adventures would grab your attention.
