[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "You Won't Know How ... Or When, a Father Frank Mystery" by James R. Callan.]
What could have been Father Lee's crime against Leroy Winston? "You won't know when. I might strike tonight. Or tomorrow." What were his words while making his promise to end the priest's life? He was certain that the priest didn't know what was coming for him.
In one of James R. Callan's Father Frank's mysteries, You Won't Know How... or When, a Father Frank Mystery, Father Frank DeLuca is approached by an anonymous person who is very livid and promises to take the life of Father Lee, a fellow priest. After four attempts at fulfilling his promise, Father Frank breaks the news about Anonymous to his co-priest. It seems like Father Lee has an old score to settle with Anonymous after Father Frank finds out that he is Leroy Winston. What has a priest got to do to save his life?
There are quite a number of good aspects that this book possesses. First of all, I love the introduction in You Won't Know How... or When, a Father Frank Mystery. The suspense embedded in it is very catchy and skyrocketed my interest in finding out what the remaining pages of the book had to offer.
Secondly, the fact that events followed one another chronologically is worth commending. One didn't have to get confused about which incident happened next or when it happened. There was enough clarity as the plot ran its course, and it was easy to understand the events in the story fully.
Using the character of Leroy Winston, the author was able to pass across a message of how deep and sensitive human beings can be and how an experience can cause one to be distraught and bitter. Leroy, who loses his mother, sinks into depression, feeling that Father Lee, who was supposed to help her take her final vows in her last moments, failed to help him. Father Lee had been occupied with his own personal issues and did not show up. I like this aspect of the book—the fact that James R. Callan was thinking about bringing to the forefront the issues that affect humanity. He also uses the character of Father Frank to bring about justice and compassion geared toward solving the case of Leroy Winston. When you read the book, you will learn a lot from this area. This sends the message that the author of this book is a humanitarian, and it is really impressive.
On the negative side, at some points, the plot was slow-paced, which caused a little boredom. The events began to be devoid of enough suspense and did not seem exciting anymore.
Also, some words that were meant to be separated were clustered together. This made reading a little bit difficult in those areas, and it occurred repeatedly. For these reasons, I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. However, there were no errors found. The book was exceptionally edited.
I recommend that people who love to read good thriller books read James R. Callan's You Won't Know How... or When, a Father Frank Mystery.
