Review of Morrow's Con
Morrow's Con: Opening Gambit by Earl James is an action-packed novel that follows the adventures of Morrow as he plans a heist. Morrow works for a crime boss as a driver. He does his job well, keeps to himself, and is friendly with his colleagues. He also doesn’t like violence. An encounter with a friend and colleague gets him knee-deep into planning a heist to steal a renowned painting and return it to its rightful owner. At first, Morrow is excited at this prospect and thinks it will be an easy job. However, he finds out later that he may have bitten off more than he can chew, as he faces many dangers for what he thought was a good idea at the time. But it’s too late to back out now, and Morrow must find a way to see the heist through or risk getting himself killed.
I immensely enjoyed this book. The author starts his story slowly as he introduces Morrow to readers. After this, the book quickly picks up as early as the second chapter, and from there, it’s full speed ahead. Most of the chapters began with a countdown to the day of the heist, which was a very effective way to create suspense and intrigue. This book was reminiscent of movies like The Italian Job and Ocean's 11.
I liked Morrow as a character; he’s very smart. I also loved that he had hidden layers and depth, hinting that he has an intriguing backstory and history that would probably be told in the next series. I’m so intrigued by Morrow that I can’t wait to read the next book to know more about him and why he works for a crime family when he is so averse to violence. The treacheries and dangers Morrow faces will get your heart racing and adrenaline flowing, and you can’t help but root for him and his team.
I honestly don’t have a single negative thing to say about this book; it was perfectly written, in my opinion. I applaud the author for his seamless and descriptive writing that made this book so enjoyable and vivid that it made me feel like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book. This book was also flawlessly edited, as I found no grammar errors. It deserves nothing less than a perfect rating. As a result, I’m happy to rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I’ll recommend it to fans of fast-paced action. However, it contains a few violent scenes that may not be suitable for some readers.
