Review of Not My Sister
Not My Sister by P.K. Simpson follows the character of Jessica. She is a woman who dreams of making it big as an actress. Two years before the start of the book, her younger sister, Olivia, had died in what appeared to be a joint suicide with one of her friends in Amsterdam. However, Jessica's mother received a letter from Olivia's stalker ex-boyfriend, Carlo, that held evidence that Olivia was alive. A masked artist had made it big in Amsterdam, and even though she wore a mask, Jessica's mother was convinced it was Olivia. Jessica agreed to go to Amsterdam to try and unveil the artist and find out if somehow her little sister was alive.
The character of Jessica was my favorite part of this book. She struggled throughout the book because she felt as though she was always putting her life on the back burner to fix her family's problems. She had to put her job on hold to go on what could be a wild goose chase to Amsterdam to find her sister. At best, this quest would reveal that her sister was still alive, but then there was the question of why Olivia had let her family believe she had been dead for two years. Jessica also had to deal with the possibility of running into Carlo, and he was a dangerous man. These conflicts all develop throughout the book, and they lead to an interesting character arc for Jessica.
The plot of this book also moves along at a quick pace. The pacing matches the urgency of Jessica's quest. However, the quick pace did not stop Simpson from having vivid descriptions. Jessica's journey took her all over the city of Amsterdam, and each location was described in a way that made it feel alive and vibrant. Though I have never been to Amsterdam, I felt as though I was there alongside the characters.
There was nothing I could find that I disliked about this book; the characters, plot, and descriptions were all enticing. I also did not spot any grammatical errors, and I believe that this book had been professionally edited.
I am delighted to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There is strong language, so sensitive readers should take that into consideration. However, there was nothing I personally disliked about the book. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy mystery books and amateur detectives. It would also be a good read for those who are interested in the city of Amsterdam.
