Review of Soul Seeker
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a steamy, thrilling twist of a story. The book begins from the point of view of Benjamin Poe. Benjamin Poe is a father, husband, and firefighter. He receives a call that the local college has burst into flames and immediately worries his son could be in danger. Upon arriving at the college with his colleagues to fight the fire he determines that something more sinister is at play. His son is no where to be found, refuses to answer his phone, and Benjamin Poe begins to suspect his son may have contributed to the blaze at the college. As Benjamin Poe begins to unravel the truth behind the fire, a mysterious man appears in town, provoking Poe. This man looks like he has been in his share of brawls, his appearance is ragged and there’s just something about his eyes that Poe can’t seem to put his finger on. As the tale of Benjamin Poe unravels, the story changes gears to the perspective of Crighton. Crighton is the mysterious man who showed up in Benjamin Poe’s town the day of the fire. As the world Crighton has always known begins to unfold many unforeseen twists arise. Not only do you see a war between heaven and hell, demon and angel, love and hate, but you as the reader can truly feel the emotion of each character as the author takes you through the story.
As this book takes a turn and you begin to see the world through Crighton’s eyes, it sparks many emotions in the reader. I felt as though I couldn’t trust Crighton in the beginning. His evil, torturous ways made me feel such disdain for him, but as he grows as an individual, you begin to see a different side to him. His rough edges begin to soften, and I found myself beginning to actually like him. I thoroughly enjoyed the different perspectives of each character, the emotion that was felt throughout the journey, and the surprising ways the author changed the outcome. I did not foresee some of the thrilling adventures that would take place. I can honestly say I can’t wait to read the next book.
The only thing I would change about this book is the fact that the first half starts from the perspective of Benjamin Poe and then the second half is the perspective of Crighton. Although the author did incorporate the character of Benjamin Poe minutely throughout the second half, I feel as though it might have been better suited to being two separate books. I would have enjoyed a more thorough and detailed version of Benjamin Poe’s life. I feel as though there could have been a deeper connection between the events that transpired in Poe’s life and that of Crighton’s.
I rate this book five out of five stars. The author truly thought through the emotion of each character and it was easy to be transported to the events that were taking place as I read. This book was exceptionally well edited, and I found no errors.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys supernatural fantasy and is at least thirteen years of age or older. There is some use of profanity and mature content that would be better suited for an audience of at least pubescent age. The mature content is not intensely gory, gruesome, or overly sexual, it is enjoyable and leaves the reader begging for more.
