Review of The Future is It’s Own Special Place

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Future is It's Own Special Place" by James Pearce.]
Do you like suspenseful action novels? Then James Pearce's The Future is It's Own Special Place is a great book for you to read. A day after losing a gambling game, Patrick visits a psychiatrist who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend. This seems like an odd reason to schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist, leading me to believe that he may have a psychological problem. When he accuses the psychiatrist of orchestrating the gambling game and setting him up to lose all of his money and car to Mr. Price, it confirms my suspicions that he is insane.
He hasn't seen his ex in years, and it seems unusual that she will set him up. However, as the plot thickens, it appears that those close to him are plotting against him. A turn of events occurs when he boards a train and runs into Mr. Price, who was sent to kidnap him. Price appears to be the bad guy at first, but as time passes, they must save each other's lives from the same person who hired Price to kidnap Patrick. Can they put their differences aside in order to survive? Who are the people who are out to get them?
I liked the quotes at the beginning of some of the chapters, one of which was "The mind is its own place. It can make a Heaven of Hell or a Hell in Heaven’s despite," paraphrased by Milton and Blake. This is true because everyone has different perspectives on what makes them happy or sad and what they value most. For example, a poor family may enjoy each other's company. Another poor family may be in the same situation, but because they lack material possessions, they live depressed lives. At the end of the day, we can't take anything with us when we die, and we can't go back in time to get the time back.
There were a few flaws in the book, one of which was that I found numerous errors. It does not appear to have been edited professionally. In addition, the author skipped from one scene to the next. This threw off my reading, and I had to reread parts of the book to follow the storyline, which was at times confusing. I thought there were too many background characters introduced in the novel. This has hampered my reading experience, so I've deducted two stars. I give this book three out of five stars.
Nonetheless, it was a good action-packed novel with some intriguing parts that kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. I recommend this book to adults who enjoy reading gripping action novels.
