Book THE DIAMONDS OF DEVIL'S TAIL
Author: A.W. Baldwin

This is a story within a series with a main character called Relic who lives within the canyons and cliffs of the Colorado River. Relic is a hermit who enjoys a simple life of just living out of his backpack, making moonshine and keeps a few caches of supplies throughout the area. He tries to protect the Pueblo caves and their artifacts from thieves whenever someone new shows up hoping to make their fortune.

The story starts out in 1957 with two thieves breaking into the office of a jewelry and getting away with a huge haul of gems.

The only curse language is within this chapter. One "damn" on page 17, line 10. Then "sh*t" on page 20, line 8. the second on page 24, line 8. Then two moe of the same on page 25, lines 4 and 14. All are within the context of exclamations.

The story then moves to present day with character of Brayden who is an aspiring writer working temporarily for his Uncle Henry in an importation insurance company. He accidently discovers what appears to be fraud committed by Henry just before they leave for a whitewater trip with a young associate named Dylan. Along on the trip are three guides, a young couple and single girl, Em, who is a geologist who has just started working for a non-profit organization that works to protect the river system and canyons.

Brayden does not want to go on this trip especially while having suspicions about Henry committing fraud with Dylan. However once they make camp on the banks of the river for a few days, someone ends up dead, found with a handful of gems in his hand. When three cave thieves suddenly show up on the scene, the story then becomes a nonstop story of greedy armed men working to find every gem possible and getting rid of all witnesses. And has a few twists.

I have to add, I am thrilled to have found this story and author. Every page is very descriptive without being forced. The details of the river, canyons and trails make the reader feel as if they are in the story. I am definitely going to be looking up more tales of Relic by starting with the first book.
