Review of Precision
Precision, by D.C. Scott, is a crime and mystery novel. Magruder was a veteran detective. After retiring from the Houston Police Department, Magruder decided that he needed to increase his income. So, he got a job in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and after several months, he got bored and asked permission to go through some cold case files.
One particular case caught Magruder's attention. The file stated how two deceased persons, a male and female, were found, and it was concluded that one of the deceased persons was responsible for the crime. Magruder became more curious as he read the file. Although the case was closed, it was placed in the “Case Unsolved Investigation Discontinued box." Afterwards, he made up his mind to solve the case.
Magruder was kind of familiar to the two people involved in the case. The male was called John. He was a great musician, who performed at concerts. In addition, the woman was left-handed, but the crime weapon was in her right hand. That and other things made Magruder conclude that the crime was premeditated, and there was someone else involved. Was he really right?
The book is intriguing and well narrated. It's full of backstories that reveal how the crime victims met. Moreover, they tell about their careers, relationships, families, hobbies, dreams, and other things they did when they were alive. The plot comprises fascinating events, unveiling what could have led to the demise of the victims. I commend the author for his vivid descriptions of scenery and events. For example, the narrations involving the hospital and prison are clear and interesting. In addition, I appreciate how he uses his story to reveal childbearing challenges and encourage adoption.
Regarding the characters, they're lifelike and interesting. Though the characters are somewhat many, the author gives enough information about them, particularly background details. John, the protagonist, is a loving man. He loves children and pets. Besides, he's kindhearted and wants everyone around him to be happy. Nonetheless, I didn't like how he let those close to him to have their way with him sometimes. Moreover, most of the female characters are daring.
Precision is appealing. Apart from the theme of crime, it explores the themes of love and humanity. However, it's not a straightforward crime story. When I got the book, I thought it would be full of investigations, but it contained more backstories than investigations. Anyway, it's the first book in a series. I guess there will be more investigations in the sequel. Nevertheless, readers who love straightforward crime books may not enjoy this one.
In conclusion, I rate Precision 5 out of 5 stars. I couldn't give it a lower rating because it was coherent and engaging. In addition, it was well edited, though I saw a few typos that didn't distract me. It'll be a worthwhile read for fans of crime and mystery books, especially character-driven ones.
