After Alan Salter and Jack Simmons murdered Mrs. Gladys Harper, the police department launched an investigation team led by a young inspector named Paul Manley to unravel the murder case. During the investigation, the team found her killers had stolen a bronze cowboy antique belonging to Mrs. Harper and sold it to Simon White, an antique dealer, from whom Richard Drake later bought the bronze antique.

When her sons, Craig and Kelvin, were informed about the death of their mother, the twins vowed to avenge her death. Interestingly, during the investigation, the police discovered the body of a young boy that had been buried in the Harpers' garden many years ago. Will the police find Gladys Harper's killers? Who is the boy whose body the police found in the Harpers' garden? Does the Harper family have any connection with the boy's death? Read First Time Hard by Colin Holcombe to find the answers to these questions.

Let me start by saying that if you are looking for a book with a sizeable amount of mysteries and actions, you just found one! This book is tainted with twists and turns that will grip your attention throughout your reading time. The storyline of this book is so captivating that just as you are about to unravel one mystery, another pops up. Again, I like how the author sets the groundwork for each plot in the book. For instance, Michael’s preference for vodka was the setting for one of the plots in the book. I must admit that this makes the story coherent and engaging, and I could not help but turn pages.

Though the characters in the book were many, the author did a fantastic job defining each character so that readers would still almost recognize each character and their roles. Also, the author's writing style is highly commendable. It is simple and flows in a manner that would make readers easily understand the storyline.

I did not find anything to dislike about this book, and I happily rate First Time Hard by Colin Holcombe four out of five stars. The only reason I deducted a star from the rating of this book is that I found more than ten grammatical errors. However, I enjoyed the storyline of this book and its intriguing plot. Due to the violent scenes in this book and the use of profanity, I recommend this book to adult readers who find pleasure in crime and mystery books.
