Review of The Black Marchetti
Reading godfather-themed novels never fails to increase my excitement levels, and this book is certainly not left out as far as I am concerned. The Black Marchetti by Carl Elliott tells of the Marchetti family, an organized crime family running in Bridgeport, Connecticut. When Jo-jo Marchetti, the youngest son of Joe Muscle, the head of the Marchettis, falls in love with Eva Mae, a stripper in one of their numerous bars, Joe Muscle does all he can to keep the "moolie" away from his son. However, before they were separated, Eva Mae got pregnant for Jo-Jo, and because of his hatred for black people, Joe Muscle kept the baby, Jovan, away from his father. Jovan grows up with the challenges of being a half-breed, and after a damning tragedy occurs in his life, he sets out to join the street life, selling drugs and making a huge name for himself. He, however, has to deal with the Marchettis simply because they run the town, and this involvement leads to several unwanted confrontations with his unknown father, Jo-jo. Will the mob boss keep the circumstances of Jovan’s birth secret because of his racism, and will the Marchettis' cover and hold on the town be finally blown away by some serious FBI agents and a dangerous rat? Check out this fast-paced, exhilarating mafia novel to find out.
This book entailed many factors that kept me attached to the very end. I loved almost all the characters mentioned in this book, as they all had a certain value or push that kept them in the street life doing what they do. Jovan was inclined to raise his brother and sister, and that, coupled with some other factors, was his main reason for joining the gang. The storyline of this book was so intense that sometimes I had to take a break to catch my breath. The plot was well-scripted, and considering this, I must say that the author did a very good job writing this novel. The author also ended this book on a great note, and I was greatly impressed by that. Moreover, it is paramount to note that the author made sure to give background details about each and every character that was mentioned in this book, notwithstanding how long they appeared in a scene. To say the truth, this is one of the best novels I’ve read, and I’m sure that anyone who is interested in Godfather-themed novels would feel the same about it.
Despite how much I enjoyed reading this book, a certain factor did not impress me in the least. This book contains many errors, and that alone was the only negative aspect I could find in the book. The book was poorly edited, and I was a bit disappointed with it because of that. Apart from this, however, I found nothing else wrong with this book.
This book, like every other mafia novel, contains heavy mature content, graphic violence, and a wide range of profanity. I’d say that it’s more suitable for a mature audience, and if gory details scare you, this book may not be perfect for you.
All said and done, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, as the errors in it made me deduct a star. I recommend this book to lovers of action, godfather-themed novels, romance, suspenseful novels, and thrillers. This book checks all the boxes of the aforementioned genres, so if you see yourself in any of the above categories, don’t hesitate to get your copy.
