[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "One of Ours" by Lynn-Steven Johanson.]
Captain Vincenzo is found in a cold pool of his own blood some days after he confides in Detective Joe Erickson about his plan to retire. He was investigating an old case that Detective Erickson suspects might have cost him his life. The detective picks up the deceased's trail and is determined to get to the root of the matter. Will Detective Joe Erickson succeed? What will he get his hands on?
I love One of Ours by Lynn-Steven Johanson because it is a very intriguing book. It centres around mysteries, murders, and blackmail, which make for a good detective story. This made me thoroughly enjoy every phase and step of the events in the book as the plot proceeds. Several deaths were surrounded by mysteries and secrets, which made for the intense suspense of the novel. Other events in the book also called for intense interest and participation.
Each character was well-developed and had a lot of action going on with them. The main characters were given distinctive qualities and descriptions to set them apart and make them relatable. Every experience they underwent reflected on their characters, whether mentally or physically. Detective Joe Erickson is described as a 42-year-old, ruggedly handsome man who has a lean body, is six feet tall, and has intense dark brown eyes. He is also intuitive and creative. His partner, Sam Renaldo, who is his polar opposite, is a forty-eight-year-old man who is a little paunchy, has a Fu Manchu moustache, and is five feet, ten inches tall. He is excellent at giving facts and handling figures. Alderman Byrne is aptly portrayed with so many negative characteristics that you will be moved to feel contempt and hatred towards him.
I love the unpredictability of events and suspense. The characters risk being murdered several times, which exemplifies their determination to bring the evildoers to justice and honour the memory of Vincenzo.
The story was fast-paced, conflicts were being resolved, and I did not experience any sort of confusion or be at a loss for the movement in the plot.
This book also stirred so many emotions in me; events like the sudden deaths of Captain Vincenzo and when the tape was discovered got me emotional. If you read this book, I believe you will be triggered emotionally too.
In so many ways, I found One of Ours to be a humorous book. The characters' witty expressions and remarks made me chuckle from time to time, and they helped relieve the suspense. I loved the romance between Detective Joe and Destiny. It was heartwarming and just what the detective needed to balance the rigorous and demanding nature of his job.
My only displeasure with this book is that I felt there were too many names of characters, most especially detectives, which sometimes confused me. I sometimes had to go back and read a particular page to make sure who a character was and that I was not mistaking him or her for another character.
Generally, Lynn-Steven Johanson's book was exceptionally edited. No error whatsoever was encountered while I was reading. I am gladly giving it a rating of five out of five stars.
I recommend One of Ours to lovers of crime, mystery, and murder stories. This book has a lot to keep them interested.
