The Daniel Roth mysteries: Book 1 is the first book of a crime/adventure series by Joel Martin.
Daniel Roth returns to his hometown, Abberline, after losing his arm in a war against the Irudani, a tribe with more connection to the land than Daniel’s people. Daniel witnesses a murder, which he investigates after the request of the victim’s wife. But this mystery isn’t all he has to deal with; the horrors and the darkness he witnessed during the war chase him and Daniel tries to escape from those dark memories, without much success.
Daniel lives with his uncle, Thomas Roth who lost his wife. With them lives Thomas niece, Samantha. And as Daniel tries to get used to life in the city after ten years of being away as a soldier, he starts dealing with the mysteries he encounters.
The book consists of three different stories. The first one is named “A final portrait”, the second “Sea of memories” and the third “Raven’s call”. All three short stories describe accurately the darkness of the world and the struggles of soldiers who have returned back to the city.
The characters are well formed, and the author describes their behavior in depth. Samantha has been raised as a lady, with all the comforts that station in life provides but she is also intuitive and courageous. Thomas is a gentleman who uses every opportunity that presents itself to him to show off, but he cares deeply for his relatives. Daniel is a war – torn hero, who is chased by the shadows of his past. He is also very intuitive and careless, as he interrogates the criminals without thought to his well – being. There’s also another character that shows up in every story, the detective inspector Thane, who at the start refuses to work with Daniel but lately relents.
This story also shows the differences between criminals from highly – esteemed families and those of the lower class. It shows the corruption people hide deep inside, but also that everyone can be reformed given the chance.
Joel Martin’s book had almost no mistakes, and the only problem I found except from a missing word was that the font doesn’t match, but you can easily ignore both of them as they aren’t really noticeable.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good adventure/crime book because it has an intriguing plot. Unlike many crime books, it lacks gore scenes thus it doesn’t raise the awareness for those who dislike explicitly violent content.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
