Review of Born Yesterday

Born Yesterday by Mary Duncan is a book that tells the horrific tales of a small town, Felton. Stephanie and Grace's family have been close since the time of their grandparents. Grace and Stephanie were like sisters and did everything together. Grace had a brother named John, who was Stephanie’s boyfriend. The two friends had different opinions about John. Grace believed that John was a troubled, dangerous young man, while Stephanie saw him as a sweet man who could never hurt a fly. Stephanie and John decide to take their relationship to the next level, and shortly after, John reveals to the world who he truly is.
The suspense in this story made it difficult to put the book down. This was one technique that the author used to keep me glued to this book. I truly couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. I also liked that the story did not drag. From the volume of the book, I knew it would be a quick read. The fact that the author started the story with suspense made it an even quicker read. I also managed to learn some things about parenting from the story, one of which is to never ignore the signs that kids show and wave them off as something that will be outgrown.
If the aim of the author was to write a disturbing story, then she succeeded because it was a disturbing story. I couldn’t tell if it was a thriller or horror; it could pass for both. I only managed to finish reading it because the story kept getting worse. I did not like the storyline because it was disturbing, but it was well-told, and I liked the suspense. I felt that the deaths were too many for a story with a lot of young people. Aside from these subjective feelings, there was nothing fundamentally wrong with the book.
Because I did not like the many deaths in the book, I will deduct a star from this book, giving it 4 out of 5 stars. The story was well told by the author, and I think that the author meant to tell a disturbing story, so I cannot take away more stars from this book as it will appeal to the right audience. The book was professionally edited, as I only found a few errors in it.
I would recommend this book to lovers of horror. The book might not be typical horror, but it is horrific. I would also recommend it to lovers of thrillers who do not mind so many deaths in the story. Also, if you enjoy reading books that are disturbing, this story will appeal to you.
