After Madeline Straub is murdered, Alex and his partner, Sean, are tasked with finding her killer. It should be simple, but every clue only leads to more questions. As Alex and Sean search for answers, they begin to suspect that the Straub family is hiding something. And the Straubs aren’t the only ones with secrets. There’s a lot more to this case than meets the eye. Not everything, nor everyone, is as it appears.

Innocent Victim is a fast-paced crime novel by Brian Cornett. The story follows Alex as he tries to solve Madeline’s murder.

I enjoyed the plot of this book. The case started off straightforward but quickly became more complex. There were quite a few twists in the story, and I liked that I couldn’t guess what was going to happen next. I also liked how the romance between Alex and Jennifer played out at the end of the book.

There were a few things about this book that I didn't care for. Even though the plot was interesting, I didn’t find the story very engaging and struggled to finish the book. I felt like I was being told a story, rather than experiencing it alongside the characters. I also thought the characters in this story seemed rather flat. It was clear the author had put a lot of thought into who each character was and their relationships with other characters in the book. The author told the reader quite a bit about each character, their backstory, and their personality traits. However, without these explanations, it would have been impossible to get a sense of who each character was. They all felt very one-dimensional, and the parts of their personality that did show through seemed superficial. This made it difficult to care about uncovering each character’s secrets, which was a significant part of the story.

I would give this book a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. I thought the plot was interesting, and I enjoyed the pacing of the story. However, the characters lacked depth and felt interchangeable. Revelations about some of the characters that should have been shocking instead felt anticlimactic. Also, this book was not professionally edited. I encountered dozens of errors while reading.

I didn’t particularly enjoy this book, but it’s possible others will. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime novels. There is some romance throughout the book. However, it is not the main focus of the story.

One-dimensional characters undermine revelations about them. The novel has some interesting plot elements but I understand being unsatisfied by the limited character development. Thank you for your honest review!
