Yet another book in the McBride series, E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer, is a suspense thriller about a terrorist threat to the U.S. Driven by his lust for power and desire to dominate the world, the dictator of Homeland, Dear Leader, has a plan to launch a nuclear attack on North America from a remote country in Honduras, from where nobody would expect an attack. However, dissatisfied with the atrocities, not everyone among his workers is ready to comply. A well-trained undercover team is sent to Honduras, working behind the ruse of a gift shop. Unfortunately for them, Kelly, on her honeymoon, discovers their lab. Seeking help from her brother, Senator McBride, and hacking into the terrorists' computer, her group discovers the launch pad and the missile, but has no clue about the nuclear warhead. The terrorists are arrested, but there is still another missile already launched into space. The US Air Force and the Space Force come into action to prevent the destruction. What is their plan of action? What happens to the bomb and the army advancing to capture New York and Washington, DC? What happens in Homeland to the lab and to the workers? The story details the sequence of events, answering the questions quite interestingly.

Written in simple, fluid language, the novel features a unique weapon of destruction—the EMP, or electromagnetic pulse, generated due to a nuclear explosion capable of causing an interruption of power supply. The devastating effect will be bringing life to a standstill due to the shutdown of all electronic gadgets and making communication impossible. This "what happens if" scenario is quite fascinating and imparts the novel with an element of suspense. The work in the science lab and the living conditions in Homeland are described as being expected in a dictatorship, but there are people who still retain hope and try to escape their fate. The helplessness of the scientists participating in an evil project is reflected in the character of Kim Jung Lo.

However, there are a few things worth mentioning that intrigue the reader and could have been improved. The terrorists on such an important mission leave their computer room unattended, providing access to Kelly. What made Steve suspicious of Rhee Su-jin enough to make him follow her? The dictator is foolish enough to overlook testing the weapon before the actual attack. The workings of the Space Force personnel in space seem far-fetched in a story that is not science fiction. But it keeps the reader captivated, no doubt.

The novel is free of graphic details of violence or sexual content, and the plot is suitable for all age groups and mindsets. The editing is very good, and there are no grammatical errors. The novel succeeds in entertaining the reader and provides an insight into the action and apprehension involved in a time of national crisis. My overall rating for the book is 5 out of 5 stars.

The book is suitable even for young readers, and I would recommend it to readers who opt for light reading and read for entertainment only.
