Review of Fault Line

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Fault Line" by N H N Hirsch.]
In the wake of the earthquake that had just occurred in San Diego, who would have known that the next story to hit the news would be the death of the mayor’s husband, Samuel Berkman, who is a wealthy real estate developer. His death had the city talking. To unravel the cause of his death, Bob Abramson, who recently moved into San Diego with his partner Marcus and had not yet passed his bar exams, was called to be part of the D.A. team in charge of the murder case. Suspects were interrogated, and many investigations were made, but there appears to be a missing clue. This missing clue could put all the other evidence together. It turned out that the missing clue lay in the unlikeliest place.
Fault Line by N H N Hirsch is a suspenseful and utterly gritty crime fiction book. The story is a perfect setup of a recognizable society, ranging from self-acceptance, stereotypes, ambition, love, and reputation. In a society where people dread stereotypes, self-acceptance is a fretful thing to do, especially considering one’s status and reputation. And if not taken care of, could lead to a fault line. The romance between Bob Abramson and Marcus was apparent yet conventional. I admire Marcus' unwavering support of his partner Bob throughout the book; even Jason admires them too. The plot is intelligently crafted, and the ending is thoroughly satisfying, leaving room for plenty of euphoria. At first, I wasn’t captivated, but as I continued to read, I developed a spiraling interest in the book due to the deeper psychology engraved in the book. The reveal at the ending was unexpected and striking, and it delivers in such a way that will have many going back to it. At the end of the day, we all tend to overlook certain fault lines.
My favorite character is Amy Berkman. This might sound a bit cliché, but Amy Berkman is a strong, self-disciplined, and ambitious woman. A woman who, even in the face of adversity and extreme distress, showed up and still did what she had to do The book might not necessarily center on this aspect of Amy Berkman, but I was able to grasp it. Somehow, while reading the book, I silently prayed that her political ambitions were not altered.
There was nothing I didn’t like about the book. The author did an outstanding job of spacing out information and avoiding immaterial information that might consequently overwhelm readers. The book has a rather conspicuous message, which is self-acceptance. Thus, I rate this intriguing tale five out of five stars.
The book was professionally edited. Though I found a few errors in it. The book is an enjoyable read that will leave readers guessing and still uncertain of who could have done it until the very end. I recommend this book to crime novel enthusiasts.
