A simply incredible, sprawling horror novel that uses vampirism to explore such weighty themes as beauty, gender politics, the aftermath of trauma, and the meaning of death. "This Symbiotic Fascination" is full of characters who all share that fascination, fascination with blood and bone and sinew, of transformation and death. Some embrace it, some deny it, and all are destroyed by it. Charlee Jacob's writing is florid and beautiful in its savagery, inventive and disgusting in its constant mutilation of the human form. And at the end of it all, I feel that she truly had something to say with this book, to illuminate parts of life that we may not want to think about, but at the end of the day, no matter how despicable our actions or how beaten up we feel, we always have a choice. I loved this book.
