Review of Wack City
Horror is an interesting subject, isn’t it? It takes many forms, too. There is the classic monster-based one, the good old ghostly horror, and the maniac-themed one, just to mention a few. Through Wack City you get to experience some of these thrillers firsthand.
The articulation technique is quite unique. Miko Montgomery sets up two characters where one is narrating stories to the other. The stories are ingenious, creative, thrilling, and scary. Some are more scary than others. The novel is based in Las Vegas, the city of sin. It provides different accounts for different characters around the city about their experiences in the city. The first story introduces us to a couple who rent out a space. Who you are and what you choose to display to the world are usually very different, aren’t they? You see, it’s funny how the duo, Connor and Nedra, start the story renting out a space. One would never imagine that…
Tatum and his sister Hazel have to put their lives on hold and go back to Vegas to look after their mother. The nursing home she was in has gone out of business, and the torch, consequently, has been passed down to them. Taking care of your mom is fun, right? For the last night of an old vet’s stay in Vegas, he chooses to stay at a motel, the Phoenix Motel. Roland needs a good night’s sleep because he has to leave first thing tomorrow morning and be back with his family. From the moment he steps in, he is pleased. The cleanliness, friendliness, and hospitality of the receptionist, and heck, even the tidiness of the room, are a guarantee of a peaceful night and a well-rested morning, right? Braxton Morello has opened up a DVD and comic book store. Business is slow, but that doesn’t really matter when three "customers" walk in and demand to be let in on his not-so-little secret. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas; isn’t that the truth? Three friends come into the city to experience the sexual pleasures she has to offer. On their mission, they didn’t expect to come across Babylon Wood. What is it? How is it done? Well…
The ending is what did it for me. Without spoiling the book, I have to say that the ending was, what’s that phrase again?, mind-blowing. It was unexpected, original, and straight-up badass. Humor was also a strong supporting factor for the book. The author narrates comedic scenes and even uses dark humor from time to time. In addition, he supplements his writing with expert wordplay, assonance, and other delightful traits. The use of real-life examples is also commendable. The flow of the storyline from start to finish makes it an easy read and suitable for every reader out there. To the editing of the book, I have one word: cheers!
The only thing amiss was Jill’s pretentious character. She really got on my nerves throughout the book. I understand that she was crucial to the storyline, but damn, if I could reach into a book and shake a character senseless...
I feel that rating the book six stars would be in order, but due to a lack thereof, I have to settle for 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to horror and thriller fans.
